Finally for me the concert season is hitting off (coming up next...youth lagoon, yacht, planning to rock, grimes,...)

So last night i pulled myself away from an amazing evening to dash off to the ACTIVE CHILD concert at Botanique in Brussels.

I was a bit weary beforehand on what I was about to witness.

Thanks to a friend I got to know Pat Grossi and his band ACTIVE CHILD through his fascinating Curtis Lane EP. The mix of high-echoed voices and the church-like atmosphere with a definite pop-vocal-twist got me hooked immediately on songs as I'm in your church at night and When your love is save.

So very excited I took my first listening to the new and critically acclaimed full album that Active Child launched earlier last year.

-You are all I see- takes off with the title song and has -as the singles Hanging on and Playing House- some great hits/songs on it. But overall I was a bit under the impression that the whole feeling on the album was floating on the same level/voice/tones. It is a great album, but less diverse and surprising than the EP was.

I was a little bit -not-sure-what-to-expect- but still quite curious when the lights went out and Pat Grossi appeared on harp.

From the first song -You are all I see- you could taste the vibrance in the air. They could make it happen live! The vocals, the harp, the effects and my favorite Rotonde concert hall gave me several goosebump moments!

By combining the more spacey and sacral songs from the full album with the more up tempo hits from the EP you never got bored and felt always in the middle of the music!

Although you can wonder, is there a great voice behind the echoes and the high-pitched effects?

Well, in a few minor occasions I had the impression that Pat Grossi's voice wasn't strong enough to carry the songs on his own without the effects. But then, again, more with the older songs with less echo in them, it worked out very well!

I must say, the concert was over in no time...i was really absorbed, didn't get bored, got goos-bumped, had happy feelings, had a bit doubts about the echo, but loved it in the end!

(ALTHOUGH he didn't sing I'm in your church at night...but hey, it's just because it's my favorite Active Child song).

musical discovery : Jagwar Ma - come save me/what love?

By the end of 2011 Jagwar Ma was tipped as one of the artists to watch out for in 2012.

So about time to take a listen to their -already- internet-wise released song Come Save Me and it's dark glowing b-side What Love? in a production by Ewan Pearson.

Australia born Jono Ma brings us almost catchy sing-a-long-songs with a big dose of vintage '60 handclap drumbeats and a pinch of swirling psychedelia in the background. But your hair up high and let your hips shake on the excellent Come Save Me.

But take -maybe for Valentine's Day sake- also a listen to the b-side What Love? While Come Save Me is best played during sunny daytimes, this What Love? becomes the soundtrack to a dark and tantric slow-dancing club-night. Catchy in a hypnotic way.

Jagwar Ma will be releasing these songs on 27th February on blue rider music...check them out and don't let them get out of your sight...they will be big!

While cleaning up I came across some old magazines and one flipped open almost directly to the page where I saw this amazing forest gazing back at me! It was the Forêt Noire wallpaper designed by French artist Nathalie Lete for Domestic.

In her own distinctive fairytale style she created a sober dark wallpaper inhabited by sometimes resting, sometimes startling looking wildlife. Say hay to Mister Deer, Mister Owl, Miss Bunny...

Available in limited edition at Domestic, where you can also find the more spring-y version called Forêt Verte, with the same imagery but in lighter, greener tones.

Lightboys : a ceilinglight odyssey!

When I saw this picture I just awed and thought...this would so fit in the bedroom-scene in Kubrick's 2001 : A Space Odyssey!

Hamburg/Berlin based design company Lightboys created a set of ceiling lights to create design for a part of the room that is often forgotten.

Jirko Bannas and Oliver Seltmann, both creatively obsessed by the idea of the light-picture, they founded their light-design studio in order to create the ultimate flat and uniformly illuminated lightwall.

For their Rooftop Ceiling Lights they used some ultra-sharp en enlarged pictures of a variety of ceilings in different styles like a Renaissance-dome, a Baroque church, une verrière, a crystal chandelier, a mirror-ball,... all fixed in a light and almost invisible frame creating -as they say themselfs- a forth dimension!

Your eyes will be focusing on other heights now...

When it comes to design vs. animals I've got a soft spot for the ones that approach it in an abstract but funny way...

so when I met The Corkers I smiled!

Based on the idea of what to do at the end of a dinner party -no more wine but a lot of corks lying around- and no one wants to go home...?

Thanks to a collaboration between Israeli design studio Monkey Business and Reddish you now can have fun even when the bottle is empty!

The concept is quite simple : a little cardboard box you can hang around your wine/champagne bottle is filled with little"body" parts that allow you to make such cute animals/creatures as there are a buffalo, a DEER, a monkey, a bunny, a crow, ...

So if you collect them all you can even make non existent dream-creatures...

I <3 this one, obviously!

Form us With Love - Bento Chair

Swedish design company Form Us With love is organizing for this year's Stockholm Design Week the Form Us With Friends design exhibition where they will work together with other companies to develop ingenious designs with a dash of their typical style.

One of their forthcoming designed objects is the BENTO chair. Together with the One Nordic Furniture Company they came up with these simple looking chairs (and table) in 3 sharp modern colors.

As One Nordic Furniture Company focuses on clever digital and design solutions, this new brand is bridging the gap between high-design and flatpack furniture.

So as you can see on the pictures below the chairs come delivered in a flat 4-piece-pack (no tools needed for the assembly / less storage space needed / easier for transport).

Giving this collection the name Bento, they combine the japanese slang word for "convenient" as well as the Finnish traditions of the use of bentwood. They infused here the playfulness of childrens-build-up toys with the Japanese convenient organised bentobox!

At first there is the trashy-neo-modern fairytale clothingline of Ysterike. Bright and tantalizing colors transform the girly shapes and cuts into fun and spectacular silhouettes.

Not far from the Ysterike boot my attention was drawn by a familiar sight. A stand full of postcards with on them this great pencil drawing of a deer. As I looked closer I discovered that behind the deer there was a modern classics fashion label called Bérangère Claire.

Refined details give the basic/classic clothes a simple but chic look. For people who believe in style everyday and not just to be in fashion. A remarkable detail is that every piece of the collection is made in France! Check out also the great t-shirts, mugs and totebags with their amazing logo-deer on it!

On my way home from Bread & Butter Berlin where I had another great encounter with the people and the golden deer from Mint, I passed by Paris to work/experience the Who's Next/Première Classe fashion fair.

Among all the dazzling creations I saw, I had the pleasure to meet French designer Hélèna Kerbiche, who passed by our boot wearing an amazing golden chain with a black bear on it!

Intrigued and amused by her appearance and her label LENA KLAX I went to visit her at her stand (next to the also Lille based brand origamijewellery).

After spending some time in London, she arrived in Paris to work with Irina Volkonski where she managed to shape here ideas and dreams into shiny objects. Ready to conquer the world Hélèna started her own label Lena Klax in her hometown of Lille, right in between France & Belgium.

Since 2009 she launched 3 collections everytime based around a story, where most of the time iconic animal shapes and heads are used to portray human strengths and emotions. So when we take an overview of the collections Step Up, Rumble in the Jungle and Never mind the Babylon, we can see bears, gorilla's, crab legs and even swan wings combined with triangles and golden stars. The emotions and stories behind these symbols are coming out of the own experiences of Hélèna and are dealing with inner combat, trust, expressing yourself and important people that have made on impression on your life...

The main materials she uses are mostly colorful resin, she molds herself in her atelier/shop, and 24 karat plaited golden chains that are often adjustable to your own use. Every piece of jewelery is made by hand by the designer herself, so what you get is a unique piece made with love for the craftsmanship!

When you come across the jewelery of Lena Klax you'll know it immediately: the eye-catching contrast between the gold chains and the bright colored animals will get your attention even from the other side of the room. The somewhat oversized chains and the way the bears, gorilla's and lightings are shaped give her collections an urban coolness.

I was already totally in love with the shiny Deer necklace! I had also put the picture of it in my blogpost about Mint and their lovely and fun creations because it looked so nice!

Now, almost half a year later at the most recent edition of Bread & Butter High 2012, the amazing people of Mint offered me this golden deer necklace as a present!

Truly the highlight of my Berlin-trip!

Little details, like the print of three branches or the wavy curls of a dreamy girl, or even the embroided confetti in the sensual transparent fabrics reveal hidden stories in this very female and dreamy but distinct summer collection.

If been following from a distance and listening to Elizabeth "Lizzy" McChesney, better know as Lissy Trullie. This DC girl with the androgynous look and the a-typic boy-ish voice is going to release her self-titled full ablum on March 6th.

If you are a bit around in the blogosphere you certainly picked up already her Self-Taught Learner EP from 2009 and listened to her guest-vocals on Bad Habits by Pretty Good Dance Moves, one of my favorites of 2009.

The new Scissor Sisters music video just dropped and it features the crazy-mouthed Azealia Banks.

While kids perform their schoolplay, Scissor Sisters take it up in a more hip-pop style the we are used to of them, namedropping even Obama and Madonna.

The lines and voice - even distorted- of Miss Banks and Mr. Shears give it all a crazy boost, but by the time they hit the chorus, the songs becomes a bit too soft to go with the rest of the song!

Not bad at all, it's catchy and it will make you dance, but just not that strong enough...maybe there will be a smashing Tiga or even a Twin Shadow remix that can make it a 100% blast!

Rododendron - a white gem of an art/design shop in Budapest!

Already the last day of my wonderful winter-trip to Budapest and still no shopping done...not until friends showed me the way to this lovely little shop Rododendron!

The graphically cutout paper Christmas tree in the window made me smile even before entering the shop. When you open the door and go into the shop, that is nicely tucked away from the busy city, it feels like a quiet oasis, or in wintertime like a snowed-in forest (I'm deer, you know). But then, when your eyes focus back again you start to see the colorfulness all around you.

Rododendron is a art/design/photo/jewelery/shop/gallery. They sell and exhibit design and work of almost 30 young Hungarian designers along a vast collection of Lomo-photography and accessories.

You'll find here original and handcrafted and plexi jewelery, children's books, graphic prints and nicely colored notebooks, strangely designed teapots and lamps, cotton bags, a cute selection of women clothes and even charming velvet puppets by artists like Tibor Karpati, Enart Vince, Laszlo Nagy, Anna Nemesi, Ayala Bar...and many more.

Some of them even exhibit in the back of the shop!

I was really fond of the big marker-made drawings by Vince Enart/Vince Boldog, as you can see the one with the yellow fox on the picture below.

And as I was looking around my eye fell also on two little drawings of Hungarian born graphic designer Panni Bodoni (portfolio) who now works and lives in Denmark. ~~(Unfortunately I forgot her name, but I'm sure the very nice shop-owner Judit Elek will help me remember her name!)~~ (Thanks Judit)

These are the 2 drawings... maybe one is a bit gloomy, but the warmth of the other one makes up for that! I'm glad to add them to my graphic forest collection!

So make sure to pass by Rododendron when you are in budapest.

When you come home after a soothing holiday and you arrive back at work, there is no such motivation a finding a nicely wrapped package waiting for you on your desk!

So this morning my to-myself-dedicated-birthday-present from UNDSCVRD arrived!

I now do posses a great white splattered black leather toiletry bag by Dutch design studio Vlieger & Vandam. I already talked about them in a previous post, but seeing it in real life and holding it just makes me wanna talk about it even more...and of course use it!

The subtle graphic input makes the bag so much more than just a toiletry bag. The irregular dashes of paint give it a used and vintage look, while the dark silver lips and the golden print on the back give it a touch of refined and hidden luxury...as if it wants to say : "This is just for you!"

I might even use it for other things than only bathroom-related events!

As I'm in packaging design I was also intriguingly surprised that my gift came in a non-woven black bag with the Vlieger & Vandam logo on it hotstamped in black leather! I just love their notion for details and finishings!

Samuel Kientsch and Benjamin Vorono, founders of Braille Man, the menswear label based in London since January 2009, build up their collections around their background in sociology & graphic design combined with their love for culture and nature.

Only using qualitative and British produced natural fabrics (like Yorkshire Tweeds and Scottish waxed cottons), they created the silhouettes they could find in the already existing fashion labels around. Every piece of their collection is, thanks to the use of the fabrics, a very tactile experience with always a reference to some of the menswear classics we should all have in our wardrobe.

As they say themselves : clothes manufactured in cuts that suit the active, modern gentleman!

After a party in the dark of the subways where you could dance in a hidden and long-forgotten art-space underneath the city of Brussels, the Vicuna team hosted their party in the graffiti-covered train station Recyclart.

Besides dj-sets by Aguila , Captain Starlight, the playful Tim Sweeney (NY) and a concert of Bright Entity you could admire and experience the designs and creations of fashion designers by the likes of

Stephanie Lotgering, Deborah Orfanidis, Jean Paul Lespagnard, Tom Van Der Borght, Giuseppe Virgone and François Cardona.

If you like the voice of Fever Ray/Karin Dreijer and you are up for some more dark electronics coming straight at you from Scandinavia, then Notic Nastic will be your thing.

Deformed voices, noisy and thumbing beats droning you up and down in a cold but vibrant trip.

Maybe a bit too much attitude in this video, not as good as The Knife videos (although I see some references) but her sound has got enough hooks to get stuck onto your skin!

Met Before and the new album Something by Chairlift

After a long periode of radiosilence, one of my favourite poptronic bands is back!

Chairlift got everyone's attention (even if you didn't know them) with their heartwarming song "Bruises" that was used for an Apple commercial.

Very curious of what other sounds they had to unleash onto the world I went to see them in concert and I must say it was amazing. Intimate but with a blast. The gorgeous looking and sounding Caroline Polachek had an on-stage love/hate-thing going on with the bass player which resulted in some thrilling heat and passion in their music (see pic of AB concert 2009).

But after touring and some guest-appearances for Miss Polachek it became a bit quiet and the band went from a trio to a duo which changed apparently also a bit the style on their new album.

Something I didn't noticed at all when they launched the uber-funny video for the feel-good-dance-song-with-the-unpronounceable-name Amanaemonesia. For me this was 100% Chairlift : fun but touching, soft but danceable.

So after this warm-up they are about to release their second album : Something.

The first single "met before" sounds almost 70s inspired with a dash of rock and full of musical effects...a bit spacey even. And also Sidewalk Safari, the opening track of the new album is bombastical psychedellica all over. A style only a band as Chairlift can get away with as the best.

So I'm looking forward to see them again in concert (album launch is scheduled for 24 January)

Gang Gang Dance

The strange discovery of this new york performance art and music band Gang Gang Dance was a loud bang that blew me back into another dimension of triangulated positive energy, tribal deformations, Indian burial grounds and even some new age aliens...all drummed together in a multi-layered musical sound wave.

It was quite impressive how the songs were building up into tantric rhythms to end up in a noisy hail to our planet.

Intriguing and almost danceable, just sometimes slightly broken up by the voice of singer Lizzi Bougatsos.

It was not exactly my cup of concert-tea (almost 10 minute songs are never really my thing), but musically very impressive!

Some pictures and a video from last nights concert of Panda Bear at Botanique Brussels.

A very echo-full concert with mellowscape songs that got a bit lost in the loudness of the sound.

The layers and sometimes retro-vibe in Mr. Lennox's voice didn't come out so clearly and gave it all a very hard edge.

Some great songs like this Tomboy (first single to his 4th album Tomboy), but maybe I had enjoyed it more in a laid-back and semi-acoustic environment.

Gonna listen to the new album though!
